Karol Szymanowski (1882 – 1937) is regarded as one of the preeminent Polish composers, next to Frédéric Chopin. Although he has been hailed as a genius by some and beatified by others, his emotional vicissitudes, erotic fascinations and adventurous travels in the south of Europe are most often left ignored. It is said that these found the fullest expression in the legendary novel Efebos, which was lost during the war and of which only fragments remain. As one of the few people in his time, the artist boldly forged his own identity, and this can be heard in his music.

The concert performed by the artistic-romantic duo (Dwóch)głos (Michał Pepol and Bartek Wąsik), which will take place in the National Museum’s classicist palace, Królikarnia, will include such pieces as Roxana’s Song from King Roger, a selection of Kurpian Songs and Mazurkas, or The Swan and In the Mountain Pasture from the ballet Harnasie.

Michał Pepol is a cellist and member of Royal String Quartet as well as a co-founder and co-organizer of the Kwartesencja Festival. Published by the UK-based label Hyperion, his works have received a number of awards, including the title of BBC Music Magazine’s record of the month or – twice – Gramophone’s Editor’s Choice award. Since 2012 he has worked at Nowy Teatr in Warsaw on New Warsaw, with Stanisława Celińska, and Krzysztof Warlikowski’s The French. The cellist’s first solo concert, The Sound Regained, premiered in 2016. In June 2017 he brought out another original project, a concert/film/performance titled Silence of the Sirens, in a duet with Magdalena Cielecka, at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.

Bartek Wąsik, a pianist and arranger, has won numerous awards, including Polityka’s Passport, TVP Kultura’s Guarantee of Culture or Fryderyk, as well as the title of Pole with Verve. As a member of the band Lutosławski Piano Duo and the quartet Kwadrofonik, he has performed throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas at such venues as the Berliner Philharmonie or Carnegie Hall. He has created the projects: New Warsaw, Kocham, Lublin, Szanuję and – together with Barbara Kinga Majewska – Bardo, which will premiere in the autumn of 2017.
