An international conference is to take place on 21 – 23 March 2018 held in cooperation with the Institute of Polish Culture of the Warsaw University. The event shall accompany the exhibition “Monument. Central and Eastern Europe 1918 – 2018” organised by Królikarnia as part of the as part of the celebrations of the centennial of Poland’s regaining of independence. The aim of the conference is the reconstruction and a deepened analysis of the multi-level material, social, cultural, historical, political and ecological biographies of monuments erected in the region of Central and Eastern Europe in the years 1918 – 2018. Treating them as a certain genre which we recognise as typical and constitutive for the region under analysis, we shall try to determine its cultural, material, formal and historical specificity in relation to both the social macroprocesses as well as grassroot cultural practices. By merging the perspectives of art history, culture studies, sociology, anthropology, social history, political sciences and law, and cutting across the disciplinary divisions, we shall ponder on how we can elaborate the most effective methods of research and exposition of the culture of monuments of Central and Eastern Europe and the social circuits which co-create it.
