Promotional meeting of “Szyldy na Starym Mieście w Warszawie”(Signboards in Warsaw’s Old Town)
Side signboards are one of the most outstanding decorative elements of Warsaw’s Old Town. They capture our attention with their original form and meticulous workmanship. The side signboards from the Old Town, intricate gems of metalwork, were designed in the coherent reconstruction programme of the Old Town. Made over the course of rebuilding Warsaw from the 1950s onwards, they allude to historical forms and reflect dominant currents in art.
The signboards are works by excellent designers: restorers, architects, builders, artists and artisans. They are an integral part of the World Heritage Site-listed monument and exemplify the history of the place.
The Office of the Capital Historical Buildings Conservation has just compiled a guidebook entitled Signboards in Warsaw’s Old Town. Good practices for owners and users. Apart from the rules of placing and installing new advertising elements, the book contains a chapter on the history of the sideboards and a catalogue of historical side signboards with a map.
After a number of talks with the owners and users of the Old Town venues, who popularize a set of beneficial practices for new signboards, we invite everybody to Królikarnia on 15 January 2016. At the event we will describe the history of the Old Town’s signboard creation, their design and references to sculpture of the time. A special guest of the meeting, sculptor Maria Owczarczyk, an author of a recently restored mermaid from a former bookshop signboard of “Dom Książki”, will speak about her experiences of doing specific projects for the Old Town.
Each participant will get a copy of the book for free.
